"Be still, and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10a

separation anxiety

Trust is the vital part of why you chose us. Your child takes clues from you … if you are sure and confident this is a good place, then they can adjust more quickly. Keep your conversation happy and positive as you talk about their school. Empower them by saying, “You can do it,” in as many ways as you can. Furthermore, don't linger as you drop him/her off. This creates the idea that either, “Oh—they aren't sure I'll be ok” or “Maybe if I make a big fuss they'll take me home.”

In the classroom a quick kiss and/or hug and “See you later” and then go, is what is BEST. Giving your child something they know is yours to keep throughout the day helps reassure them (nothing of value, please, in case it gets lost).

Parenting isn't easy. The school staff and administration are here to encourage and support you. Don't hesitate to talk to us about your concerns.

put your cell phone on ICE inspired by Barb Riester

Even though we all hope for safety and smooth sailing, we have to prepare for the unexpected. One way of preparing is to include a list of ICE numbers on your phone. ICE means In Case of Emergency. List numbers in this way: ICE.Mom.[Name] or ICE.Hubby.[Name] or ICE.Sister.[Name]. For example, someone may list a number as ICE.Mom.JaneSmith. Emergency workers are typically trained to look for ICE numbers in a cell phone should a crisis demand a contact. Including your relationship with the person and the person's name allows quick and clear connection.

Editor's note: A few months ago I saw the practicality of this suggestion. I was coming off a plane and was just out of the Jetway when the passenger behind me took a call. It was a flight attendant who found a phone left on a seat, scrolled through to find the ICE numbers, and called, “Mom.” The phone and the owner were reunited in moments.
