answers

What is a Small Group?
Most of our Small Groups are made up of 8 to 12 people who want to grow spiritually and connect with some friends who are going in the same direction. Sometimes the best description is simply a group of people like you who are looking for a way to become more like Christ.

Are all Small Groups the same?
The short answer: NO. At Mariners Church we have all kinds of groups because we have all kinds of people. We have groups for married couples, empty nesters, single adults, blended groups, men's groups, women's groups; just to name a few. We have groups designed for people who are investigating Christianity and groups for people who want to really dig into a book of the Bible. Some of our groups are focused on developing solid relationships with other believers. Basically, we have a small group for just about everyone and everything.

Why should I join a Small Group?
There are four very important reasons. First, you'll begin to understand the Bible better in a small group (there's nothing like discovering God's Word together). Second, you'll begin to feel like you're part of God's family, not just a face in the crowd. Third, prayer will become more meaningful for you (your friends will be praying for you and with you). Finally, chances are you'll be able to handle stress and pressure better (when your friends are there for you, life is a very different experience).

Do I have to be a member Mariners Church to join a Small Group?
No. Small Groups are for everyone.

How often does a Small Group meet?
Most groups meet 2 to 4 times a month and they meet on a predictable day and time (e.g.: the 2nd and 4th Friday from 7 to 9 pm). The most popular days are Mondays through Thursdays, but we do have a few groups that meet on the weekends.

How long does a typical Small Group stay together?
Our groups are ongoing. That is, they don't do a particular study and then disband. Some of our groups have been meeting for several years. We encourage groups to stay together for an extended period of time because this gives the group members time to become acquainted and more comfortable sharing in the group.

What do I do if I do if I can't seem to get in a group?
Great question! If you are unsuccessful in finding a group or nobody has contacted you regarding joining a group, let us know. Don't hesitate to contact Patty Snyder, 949.854.7030 x348 with any questions.

What happens at a Small Group meeting?
Every group is different but there are some common denominators. Most groups have a time for just hanging out, talking about the week and what's going on in life. The central component is a study of something very relevant to the members of the group. It may be the study of the book of Romans or the Gospel of John. Or it might be a study dealing with stress or building better relationships from a biblical perspective. Our groups are designed to encourage discussion and engage each person in the process. Small groups always provide an opportunity to pray for each other and care for one another.

Where do the Small Groups meet?
Most of our groups meet in homes in the area. A few of our groups meet in local restaurants or office buildings.

Is there childcare available?
Every group deals with this issue in its own way. Some of the groups go in together and make arrangements for a babysitter or take turns watching the children. Other groups require each participant to make their own arrangements.

What if I don't like the first group I try?
We encourage you to give the group a couple of visits. It may take a couple of times to begin to feel like you're in the right place. But at the same time, we want you to find a group that fits you! So don't be afraid to try another group if you don't really feel good about the group you try.

Can I start my own group?
We love it when people are interested in leading a group of their own. If you'd like more information about leading a small group click here to fill out the online leader application, or contact Patty Snyder, 949.854.7030 x348 with any questions.

How do I get into a group?
There are two options. Visit us at the Small Groups' patio table any weekend after the services or sign up on the Mariners website by clicking on "join a group."

What are Flow Questions?
Flow questions are simply a way many groups look at God's Word together and discover what it says for their lives. Flow Questions are what we recommend you use as your curriculum for your small group. The Small Groups Resource Team writes flow questions weekly (to have them sent to you click here) and they typically tie into the weekend message.
